Mini Lesson: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in the Workplace

This mini-lesson focuses on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a theory that can be used to understand employee motivation and its effect in the workplace. This mini-lesson can be incorporated into a larger lesson plan on motivation in the workplace, which could focus on a variety of theories that can be used to assess employees in different organizations. The PPT included focuses on the basic definition of Maslow’s hierarchy and motivation and then provides students with a case study that can be used to understand the theory.

A worksheet is provided so students can directly write what they understand based on the theory, and ultimately get “applied” experience. We emphasize that organizations may actually use this theory to understand employee needs to increase their motivation and ultimately improve their performance.
